dirges (dilly dally day)

here i am again
playing dirges for the dumb
and crying in my sleep
singing "oh la dilly dally day oh"
so long, what a beautiful melody
long gone, what a beautiful song
and here we are, my friends,
saying prayers for our kin
while arguing theology in maths
singing "oh la dilly dally day oh"
so long, what a bittersweet melody
long gone, what a bittersweet song
and here we are, my enemy,
handshakes a quivering
o’er our rusted guns
singing "oh la dilly dally day oh"
so long, what a dissonant melody
long gone, what a dissonant song
and here we are, my love,
whisperin’ promises we know
we know we just can’t keep
singing "oh la dilly dally day oh"
so long, what a mournful melody
long gone, what a mournful song
and here we are my child…
…oh my child!…
singing "oh la dilly dally day oh"
so long, what a beautiful melody
long gone, that was a beautiful song

on the way ('07)

on the way here
reminiscing
remembering you
in your party dress
drunk in heels no less
and singing along
I always wondered about you
how about you...
on the way here
I was dreaming
of what could be
and what is gone
so when I see you
in your skater shoes
you beat my heart
it runs along...
so on the way home
I had to kiss you
couldn't let you run
you run on alone
because I know love
I won't see you for
oh so long
on the way there
I'll be remembering
and maybe next year
we'll come home

way back home

find your way back home
hope you find your way back home
from all the night time rambles down the gooseberry lane
from the haunting of the nightclubs to the closing’s dodge and feint
from all the sweet & surly voices and the thronging of their manes
from the darkened deadly places where the lies are whispered stains
to the morning after’s light, when the dawn is fraught with shame.
(hope you) find your way back home (x2)
from all the big mistakes and their callous wakes
from the poisoned cups and the trick hand shakes
from your instant crush to your true heartbreaks
from your first small steps to your last out-take
to the middling in-betweening, both the riddle and the gleaning
from the dead end streets and the beurocrat creeps
from the bottomless blues and the telephone sweeps
to your parents’ misdemeanours where the fault lines run so deep
(hope you) find your way back home (x4)
from the hardest falls and their hard-earned walls
from the human race to their bathroom stalls
from the war with us and the gallows call
from the strange disease and the money ball
to the stumbling and the striving; the living and the dying, all.
hope you find your way back home.
